A little fight in you. I like that.

Simple avatar tutorial

Program used: Photoshop 7

I haven't written a tutorial in forever, so it's probably not going to be 100% clear. Deal with it? ^_^

Image used: Hayden

001: Resize your image to fit 100x100 pixels. Be creative, the way you crop and resize is completely up to you.
Mine is like this.

002: In every good graphic, you'll always duplicate your background layer. (So if you mess up, you can delete without losing the original image.)
So duplicate the background layer.
003: Select the Elliptical Marquee tool and make a selection around the face. Once you get something you like, inverse it (Shift+CTRL+I). Then go to Filter - Blur - Radial Blur
My settings were this.
Amount - 25
Blur Method: Spin
Quality: Good
Then hit OK.
My result.

004: Add new layer. Fill it with #0B1019 and set it to Exclusion.
005: Then I added this texture (made by Me)

and set it to screen. Adjust as necessary.
006: New Selective Color layer
Reds -
Cyan: -17
Magenta: +13
Yellow: +12
Black: +14
007: Another texture (Got it some where off livejournal)
Adjust as necessary. Set to Screen
008: New Gradient Map layer - Black to White. Set to Soft Light
009: Another texture (Made by Me)
Add it and set it to Screen, and adjust as necessary.

My result so far:

You COULD stop here if you wanted, it doesn't look half bad... but I decided to do a few more things.
010: Add new layer.
Make sure your foreground and background colors are black and white. Then go to Filter - Render - Clouds
Play around with the settings a bit, I wanted more white colors in the render.
Then I erased the clouds around Hayden's face and set the layer to Screen to kinda give it a "glowy" feel.
011: Make a new Gradient Map layer, with a pink and dark pink gradient. Then set it to Luminosity. My effect makes the icon look like a washed out grey.
012: I added light textures and text. Have fun with it, play around. You'll get something good.

All done!
